The Duke of Northumberland holds the football that will be used in the annual Shrove Tuesday football game on the Pastures below Alnwick Castle. Two teams compete in the match, grouped according to where people live; in the parish of St Paul's or St Michael's. According to local legend, which historians may wish to look into, the first game was played with the head of a Scotsman in the aftermath of one of the incursions of Scots armies into Northumberland.
